So far this weekend has been one full of tastebud and eye candy exploding experiences! On Saturday we headed to Newtown with the boys. After our mission was complete we stopped for this...
Yummy TREAT!!! Gelato in the colours of the rainbow and mixed up with all kinds of fun flavors like raspberry with red pepper, banana and salty caramel, biscutis, chocolate, nuts and all...this place, Cow and the Moon Artisan Gelato was a special very treat. It was fun being served by my niece Grace and her friend. It was fun trying to decide just which flavours to have and all in a hopping little cafe.
There was much tasting and oogling over the pretty food items on display. as the imagination engaged in visual taste fantasies.
And what were we doing in Newtown anyway? Well Sam and his friends have been asked to paint a graffiti mural and we were buying paint to do the job. Going to the paint shop was like walking into a secret world all the while knowing I didn't belong. There were two ultra cool guys behind a counter that protected walls and walls of colourful cans of spray paint. It looked familiar to me...colour everywhere bursting with the potential to make art. It was painfully embarrassing for the three teenagers to have their moms in tow but in fact it is illegal for minors to buy the paint. They couldn't even carry the boxes out of the shop! I try not to embarrass my son..(snicker here because I walked right in and started talking to the "cool" guys knowing full well there is a major cringe going on behind me! can't help it...I am who I am.) Anyway, Sam is pretty excited to get this job and has taken it very seriously. Sketches and conversations have been about it all weekend. I could show you a picture but I have been banned from blog posting it.
Instead I'll show you photos from Sue Cody's class on Sunday. We open the shop for this class on a Sunday and it was like an Aladin's cave of hexagons and fabric party items.
Evidence of hexagon and applique love was everywhere.
The Tree of Life was growing in a few corners.
This one is by our Liesel and has a nice cool feeling to it as it grows out of it's mound of clam shells. By the end of the day there were lots of flowers attached to these branches.
Susan has done hers on the Moon Face Echino which sets a scene for fairy tales and fantasy.
Lois has been working for a long time on this gelato treat. Bit by bit it has come together. I can remember Lois coming into the shop early this year looking for fabrics in this colour way so it was fun to see it now as the borders are nearing completion.
Tiny hexagons put together with careful attention to detail created a nicely balanced quilt full of whimsy and delight.
Imagine finishing this! Just imagine reflectingo on each choice. First what colour family, then what to feature from the chosen fabrics and then the cutting and piecing until at last this much done! What a sense of satisfaction Lois must feel when she looks at this.
And yet, there's more to do!
There are projects brewing around the table tops finding features in fabrics and combinations with promise.
I don't get into this class often and despite it being a scheduled day "off" it was very special to be a part of what was going on in Sue's class. She is such a dedicated designer and teacher. Each fabric recommendation is carefully considered on many levels. It has to be when so much time goes into the finished project.
Funny enough I am doing Hexagons as well but on a different scale. These are 2 1/2" and are from the hot new Lark collection by Amy Butler.
We've put these behind the counter for safe keeping. They just arrived and some of the bolts are already looking lean. The palette is strong but that only supports the strong graphic impact of the designs. I have my favorites but they are many.
We've also started a collection of MO Christmas packs. We see Christmas as a quirky combination of red and green that suits what we know will be a summer day filled with love.
It is a tad early for Christmas but these things take time. Speaking of time, that daylight savings switch got me yesterday. I had NO IDEA it was time to change the clocks forward. Imagine my surprise when I hit the gym at the regular start time only to find my gym buddy packing up to go! UGH! I am fairly disciplined but the fact that she was done and I was just starting was too much for me. I looked at her, then the clock and my head started swimming in desbelief! How! What? When????? This little shift on the clock throws me out for a few days. As if I can exist in a world with one less hour in the day!!!! What THE!
I'll leave you with this tempting little idea! Uzbek Patches with this Amy Ikat and a packet of Reece's shot cottons. Call me evil but this is to die for as the border for this quilt.
Fully inspired to get to work, I am off to cram that extra hour back into today somehow. k
