Each year at the quilt show I hear with interest the phrase, "There's nothing new at the show." In today's world of immediate visual stimulation it is possible that we have seen snippets of things on line and made a snap decision about what we see. By the time we get a chance to see it in person the freshness of new has worn off and we may disregard the value as a result. As we were packing kits yesterday that thought ran through my head...why do we bother with the effort to go to the show? Each year it takes an enormous effort to plan, execute and be a stall at the Sydney Craft and Quilt Show. I started to consider and then decided to share why we do what we do in order to set up for business at Glebe Island for the show next week!
The view and space is enough really! I always love stopping to have a look around from this perspective!
Reason 1: I am a quilter today from a brief visit to the Quilt NSW show two decades ago. The mere experience of seeing 400+ quilts sent my mind into a creative spin that has never stopped. Each year I am amazed, in the true sense of the word, at the creativity on display. From tradition to art to modern...the quilts show the efforts of busy hands across our state and beyond. The chance to wander aimlessly through the quilts absorbing the ideas of so many talents is enough.
Reason 2: Without the stalls of shops and businesses at the show there would be no show. This event is not a charity. It takes months and months and months of planning by teams of volunteers at Quilt NSW. From stands to prizes, schedules to displays...all this takes an enormous amount of effort. Without the business end of the show their efforts would not be financially viable. Because I can, I do support the show.
Reason 3: Gathering in person is fun. I love watching the women walk by our stall while chatting and laughing. They sit over coffee and enjoy their purchases comparing scores of unique fabrics, tools and projects. I see them arm in arm at the entrance catching up with each other. Social Media friends gather in loud greeting groups with arms in the air for selfie photos. This joy is fun to see.
Reason 4: I love Material Obsession and the comradeship efforts of all my team. Over the years real talent of the women of MO has made my shop one I am proud of for the loyal, honest way in which they work together. The show is an opportunity to show off the work we do. We do it together supporting each other in our highs and lows, ups and downs, wins and losses. Creating a space where we can show off this spirit is special.
Reason 5: We are a business. This is a great place for new and old quilters to have a look at what we do and talk to us about why. We will be demonstrating some of our best techniques on the stall so please, stop by and have a look...a chat...ask us questions...just say hi.
Reason 6: Each year I discover that the newness is in me. I need to refresh, consider and learn with an open mind. The new combinations of things, the creativity of the quilters, shop owners, designers, manufacturers...its all there for us to learn about in depth. Take the time to meet the makers, engage with the Quilt NSW representatives and enjoy the lively nature of being there in person! See you there...Enjoy!!!
